An Announcement from Pro Bono Net

A New Name for Our Next Chapter: Welcome to Scale Justice

After 25 years of expanding access to justice through technology and collaboration, Pro Bono Net is becoming Scale Justice. Our new name reflects our mission.

Our Story Continues

Our Mission Remains the Same

For over a quarter century, we've been committed to bringing the power of law to all. That commitment hasn't changed, but our name now better reflects how we do this work.

Scale Justice embodies our approach: we create digital tools and impactful partnerships that help millions of people navigate the law, access justice, and live more secure lives.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Why "Scale Justice"?

Our new name captures both what we do and how we do it.

Scale

Speaks to the magnitude of the justice gap — and our commitment to meeting it with solutions that reach millions of people and strengthen communities. It reflects our belief that meaningful change requires working at a scale equal to the need, and rebalancing the scales of justice for those who have too long been underserved.

Justice

Reminds us why we do this work: to not only connect individuals with legal help, but to ensure that all people, regardless of income or background, can access justice, engage with the law, and assert their rights with dignity, hope, and support.

Together, Scale Justice reflects our commitment to transforming access to justice through technology, collaboration, and community partnerships. We're building a future where the law belongs to everyone.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

After 25 years of growth and impact, we've evolved from our roots as a pro bono coordination network into the nation's leading access to justice technology innovator. While we remain deeply committed to supporting pro bono work, our programs now span far beyond that original focus. We serve individuals seeking legal help directly, partner with legal aid providers, courts, and community organizations to strengthen their impact, and champion systemic change to help ensure the power of the law belongs to everyone. "Scale Justice" better reflects the full scope of our work today and the communities we serve.
As we've grown, we've heard feedback that our name didn't fully capture what we do. Many of the millions of people who use our tools each year may never interact with a pro bono lawyer. Our new name better represents our holistic approach to expanding access to justice through digital tools, impactful partnerships, and community-centered innovation.
Yes. We remain the same 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the same tax ID number (EIN: 13-4178887). Donations to "Pro Bono Net" and "Scale Justice" refer to the same organization and are fully tax-deductible.
No action is required on your end. Existing agreements remain valid and enforceable. We'll coordinate with partners on updating letterhead and materials as part of our normal contract renewal and amendment processes.
All probono.net sites, platforms, and listservs will continue operating normally throughout our transition. We'll gradually introduce Scale Justice branding while maintaining full functionality, and coordinate with partners where needed.
These established program brands will continue operating under their current names, which are trusted by millions. You may see "powered by Scale Justice" or similar attribution added over time, but programs like LawHelp.org and Citizenshipworks.org will retain their recognizable identities.
Justicia Lab continues as our immigrant justice technology lab, working hand in hand with immigrants and their advocates to develop digital tools that help over 500,000 people annually find critical immigration information and relief. This rebrand strengthens the connection between Justicia Lab and our broader organization while preserving Justicia Lab's distinct identity and focus.
No. Our offices remain at 228 Park Ave S, PMB 90360, New York, NY 10003-1502. Email addresses will transition from @probono.net to @scalejustice.org, but probono.net addresses will continue to work during our transition period.
During our transition, both names are appropriate. After our rebrand is complete in 2026, we ask that you use "Scale Justice" in new materials and communications.
Reach out to your primary contact at Scale Justice, or email us at info@scalejustice.org (or info@probono.net during our transition). We're here to help answer any questions about the rebrand.
